A series of seminars featuring local sailors

January 12th—Jack Halterman

Topic: Local Sailing in Santa Cruz

Jack will be discussing local conditions and tactics specific to Santa Cruz waters from

mapping wind patterns to racing strategies. He will also talk about safety issues and

organizing crew.


January 19th—Dave Emberson

Topic: Introduction to Racing

Dave will speak to the racing process from understanding Notice of Race (NOR’S) and

Sailing Instructions (SI’s), reviewing the start sequence and basic rules of conduct on the

racecourse.


February 9th—Jay Crum

Topic: Advanced Tactics

Jay will be discussing advanced tactics and strategies for passing, defending and starting.


February 16th—Beau Vrolyk and Mike Gross

Topic: Beginning-Racing Rules

Beau and Mike will discuss the definitions and basic racing rules when boats meet on the

water from pre-start/starts, upwind legs/marks, downwind legs/marks to gates/finishing.


March 9th—Mike Gross and Beau Vrolyk

Topic: Sportsmanship-Basic Principles and Fundamental Rules

They will be discussing the protest/redress requirements and process. Other topics will be

penalties/exoneration and sportsmanship/misconduct hearings.


Club will open at 6:30 pm on these Wednesday evenings. 

Seminars will begin  promptly at 7 pm and conclude by 9 pm. The bar will not be open but members can bring their own refreshments. These seminars are open to all club members and invited guests. 

It is strongly recommended you purchase Dave Perry’s book titled Understanding the Racing Rules of Sailing through 2012.
